Dr. Mark E. Hammer
Dr. Hammer is a retina and macula specialist with more than 25 years' experience in the evaluation and treatment of serious eye disease. He has been in private practice since 1978 and also serves as volunteer clinical associate professor at the University of South Florida. He is listed in Best Doctors of America and the Guide to America's Top Ophthalmologists.
Dr. Hammer's dedication to the field of ophthalmology has resulted in over 60 published articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has authored book chapters on physical retinal injuries and the use of silicone oil for difficult retinal detachments. He is involved in clinical research programs and participates in clinical trials of new treatments for patients with macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Hammer earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University and his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and his fellowship in vitreoretinal disease at Devers Eye Clinic. After two years of private retinal practice in Rochester, New York, he served as a full-time faculty retina specialist at the University of South Carolina for six years. Dr. W. Sanderson Grizzard
Dr. Grizzard is a retina and macula specialist with more than 25 years' experience in the evaluation and treatment of serious eye disease. He has been in private practice since 1984. He is currently a volunteer clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of South Florida. He is listed in Best Doctors of America and the Guide to America's Top Ophthalmologists.
His dedication to the field of ophthalmology has resulted in over 60 published articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-authorship of a book on pneumatic retinopexy. Dr. Grizzard is in demand as a lecturer in the U.S. and Europe. He is involved in clinical research programs and participates in clinical trials of new treatments for patients with macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Grizzard received his bachelor's degree from Emory University and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Following completion of his residency, he worked at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, studying ophthalmologenetics and retinal disease with Professor August Deutman. He then returned to the United States and completed a retina fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Ivan J. Suñer
Dr. Suñer is a retina and macula specialist with 12 years experience. He has been in practice since 1996 and has served as a professor at Washington University-St. Louis, University of Miami-Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and Duke University Eye Center. He has been recognized as Professor of the Year at these institutions on five occasions.
Dr. Suñer has published 16 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is the author of a monograph on quality of life for patients with age-related macular degeneration, and a book chapter on proliferative diabetic retinopathy. He has performed funded basic science research on the biology of nicotine and cigarette smoke on the retina, specifically in macular degeneration. He has been involved in clinical research programs in the areas of age-related macular degeneration, optical coherence tomography, ultra-widefield angiography scanning laser in retinal vascular disease, digital imaging techniques and technologies for diabetic retinopathy screening, and new instrumentation in sutureless retina surgery.
Dr. Suñer earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Harvard University and his medical degree from Yale University. He completed his residency in ophthalmology as well as his fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at University of Miami-Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. After four years in the U.S. Air Force at Scott Air Force Base as Chief of Ophthalmology and at Washigton University-St. Louis as instructor in ophthalmology, he served for five years as an assistant professor of ophthalmology at University of Miami-Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and as chief of ophthalmology section at Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He served for three years as an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Duke Eye Center and as the chief of ophthalmology section and associate chief of surgery service at Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Suñer maintains memberships, fellowships and/or examiner status with the following groups and associations:
